A civilisation is the word for a large group of people that have a shared culture, traditions, and customs. They generally want what is best for each other and their community, and normally share laws, language, and currency.
There have been many civilisations throughout the ancient world. You have probably heard of Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, and maybe even Persians and Babylonians. The Sumerian Civilisation is over 5,000 years old.
Civilisation occurs when humans can address their basic needs for food, water, and warmth, and they have time and energy spare. This time can be use to build structures that provide safety, learn more, be creative, social, and experimental, and improve their lives and the lives of people around them.
For a civilisation to be successful, it needs to address all of its needs, including:
Access to Food and Water - This is often a factor of the location of a civilisation and could incorporate farming, fishing, and/or hunting.
Safety and Security - Landscape and structures like buildings and walls provide safety from the weather and invaders, as well as storage for food and resources.
Government and Community - People are organised into different roles and jobs including food production, defence, organisation, craft, and culture and the arts.
Culture - the people are able to partake in culture, religion, sport, craft, learning, and art.
Many cultures also have a social structure and/or a monarchy, writing, and currency (but they don't have to).
Use the prompts below to decide what your civilisation will need and where it will live. You can decide where it will be located first, or decide what it needs then find a suitable location.
There is a printout you can use to keep track of your ideas to the right, or you can use your own method.
Pick a location for your civilisation
Because of the large number of people, access to farming or fishing is very important. Also clean drinking water and stable land to build structures on.
Use Google Earth or Google Maps to pick a location. You could also imagine or design your own location based on the needs of your civilisation. If you use a procedurally generated game such as Minecraft, No Mans Sky, or Spore, you can use that to inspire you!
Decide the base needs and features of your location
Decide what your civilisation will eat, how it will scale (get bigger), and how it will get its food, water, and natural resources.
You need to think about what location will allow this. Rivers and planes are great for food and water, but have less access to natural resources and security. Mountains might provide more security and natural resources, but it would be harder to build structures and farm.
Now that you have a location for your civilisation to begin, it's time to design a layout and plan for our civilisation and how its going to thrive and address the needs of its people.
Make a list of the jobs, roles, and buildings that you will need in order to address the needs of your developing civilisation. Some of the things you'll need to think about might be:
Food - Who will be collecting the food? Where will it be stored and what tools and spaces will you need to collect it?
Water and Waste - How will waste be disposed and how will people get fresh water? Will this be with a tool or construction? Who will make it?
Resources - Where will resources like wood and stone come from? What will structures be made from? Who will collect these resources?
Security - What structures will there be in order to keep the civilisation safe? Will there be walls, a moat, soldiers? Or will the terrein keep them safe? Think about weather, natural disasters, wildlife, or invaders.
Government and Community - Will your civilisation have a leader? Will they be a monarch (king or queen), elected, community board, or religious or military leader? How will decisions be made? How will jobs be assigned? Is there a currency or bartering? or will everything be shared?
Culture - How will people express themselves? Will there be a theater, artists, music, or similar? Who will make Will there be schools and what will be taught? Who will make improvements? Are there inventors and/or philosophers? where do they live?
Lastly, it's time to design the layout of your civilisation. Sketch out a design from an eagle-eye view, or use a software or game. If you or your school has minecraft it is a good tool, especially if you are used to playing it. You could also use LEGO or a similar modeling resource to make a scale model. There are some examples below.
